Borrowing books

Provided you meet the criteria for joining the library you can borrow items conveniently from which ever location you work.  With a library card and PIN, you can reserve, renew and request books on our online catalogue system, ELMS, and they will be sent to you in the internal post. The library contains over 15,000 books, pamphlets, and reports, plus CDs and DVDs on all aspects of healthcare and its management.

Journal articles
You have access to a wide range of full-text online journals which can be accessed using an NHS Athens log-in.  We also offer a document delivery service where we can get articles for you from other libraries.

NHS Athens
An NHS Athens password allows you to access electronic books, 2000 plus full text journals and to search for articles using the NHS databases, from any internet linked computer or handheld device. Sign up for an Athens password or get more information from our Athens help page.

Database training and access
Free training in information searching skills is available to staff and students, to help you find the health care evidence needed to support your work or studies. NHS staff have access to eight specialist databases through NHS Evidence, covering medicine, nursing and psychiatry.  An NHS Athens password allows you to search for articles, and access the full text electronic versions of over 2000 journals.

Literature searching
If you need help finding health or medical informationcontact us by e-mail , letter, phone or in person and we will search for you or assist you to search, from a range of information sources. Please supply us with as much information as possible, including keywords, to help us locate the most appropriate information.

Current awareness service
We can help you to keep up to date in your area of work.  Keeping abreast of new research and relevant journal articles can be time consuming and overwhelming so why not have the information fed to you. We can help you to subscribe to subject-specific current awareness bulletins, help you to use RSS feeds, and sign up to journal contents page alerts.

Enquiry Service
In addition to conducting literature searches, we provide a general enquiry service. Enquiries will receive a response within 24 hours, during Monday to Friday. If our staff are unable to answer your query, where appropriate, we will refer it on and inform you of this action.
